Paul Cordwell selected for Trade City by Harfleet&Jack
Paul Cordwell obsesses over the substantial material truth of the art-object as a way of pondering how dumb, obdurate matter creates meaning, but proceeds with an awareness that a paring down to the nearly intangible demands a focus and attention, plus an act of faith, comparable to the convert viewing a saint’s relic.
Cordwell is based in Manchester and has exhibited internationally. Solo Exhibitions include: Stuff And Nonsense, The All Year Round Club, Manchester; Black Spill, Espace 72, Mont-Disson, Belgium; Ugly Little Ornaments' (sound work with Loop-aznavour), KFAI radio station, Minneapolis, USA, and KKUP radio station, Cupertino, California, USA; and Painting Now, Crescent Art Centre, Scarborough. Selected group exhibitions include: The Past Sure Is Tense, Casket Works, Salford; Hapless Fictions Set Adrift, (with Mike Pacey) Artconcept Festival, St. Petersburg, Russia; Mother Tongue, Daily Constitutional Soundcast, Virginia, USA; I Want To Suck Your Bones, L’Oblo Cinema, Lausanne, Switzerland; Nothingness, Deviant Art Festival, Trollhatten, Sweden and V22 Gallery, Hackney, London; and Objects In Waiting, End Gallery, Sheffield, in 2006.

Harfleet&Jack's Curatorial Approach: Trade City
For TradeCity Harfleet & Jack have selected three artists that reference the unique qualities of the CHIPS building designed by Will Alsop who is said to be inspired by “three fat chips piled on top of one another”. The resulting building and its’ architectural form and surrounding area suggest the notions of scale and ironic metaphorical interplays that Andrea Booker, Paul Cordwell and Kevin Hunt explore within their artistic practices. Each artist explores notions of scale, perception of the urban environment, and the status of the objects that exist within it.
