Becky Shaw

Becky Shaw makes work that explores the relationship between objects and people. This includes 'reverse engineering' a vodka bottle mould, and an investigation of the interweaving of human and material life in an aggregate floor tile (for Firstsite Newsite 09). In 1998 she received a doctorate, and since then has continued to work across academic and art production. Between 2000 and 2006 Shaw was Co-Director of Static Gallery, Liverpool; an organisation focused upon energising critical thinking in the city. She currently leads the MA Contemporary Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University.

Islington Mill Art Academy's Curatorial Approach: Trade City

The ILVA Tree, Becky Shaw

Instructions to the Independent Art Academy, Islington Mill.
1.Gain access to the mall that houses, the now liquidized, ILVA.
2.In the disused foyer there are two small ornamental trees. These are dying.
3.To improve your skills and to ensure a record, make drawings of the trees in situ.
4.Contact the company responsible for the trees and request to have them felled and donated to you.
5.Research how to get the wood of the trees pulped. In keeping with the aims of the Independent Art Academy this should be a means that increases your skills and maintains your autonomy. Keep the leaves.
6.Research how to mill the paper and make smooth, printable sheets. You should aim to do this within your own premises so you can capitalize on any investment.
7.Research and make a good ink from the tree leaves.
8.Use the commission budget for any equipment needed to make your print workshop functional.
9.Create an artful design incorporating the most skilful drawing and this text.
10.Print as many posters as the volume of paper and ink allows.
11.Send the posters to advertise your work.
